Kindergarten

Ethan has been at kindergarten for a whole week now. He chose a pink shirt, brought an apple for his teacher, and gave his feather to a little boy who asked. And that was just the first day!

Take two

Sometimes-- actually quite often-- with commission pieces it takes two or three tries before I have something that makes both the client and me happy. Here's the beginnings of a second stab at Seventh Siren.

The woman on the bird will be flying into a framed image of the night sky over an ocean toward a star.

What to do on a lunch break

So, on my lunch break I Googled myself. I know. I'm sad. But actually it's a relatively difficult chore, there being eighty-bazillion "Janet Lee"s or "J. K. Lee"s, but I did manage to find this:http://style.nashvillecityblogs.com/?cat=26

How cool is that?

Ok, well, I know that it isn't like the whole article is about me, but still...

More firsts!

So, I tried block printing last night. No training. Minimal reading of "how-to's". Just picked up my carving tools and went to town.
By the way: if you're holding the carving knife upside down, it's easier to gouge your finger. Just letting you know!

But, considering I carved half the darn thing with the tool upside down and considering I had no idea what I was doing, I don't think it sucks...
Trying block number two tonight. Wish me luck!

Seventh Siren

Portrait of a work in progress. I met Virginia Evans through MySpace and later around the 'hood. We bonded over a failed sock monkey attack. She asked me to try my hand at an album cover. Here's my first pass. We'll see whether I'm on the right track and capturing the essence of the Seventh Siren. I still need to paint a floundering ship in the distance and I bought some mulberry paper, planning to make block prints of wings and decoupage them around the borders.

Cross fingers!

The song sounds lovely, BTW. Check out Virginia and her music at http://www.myspace.com/virginiaevans.

Tomato Post Mortem

The dust has settled. The tomatoes are all back in their beds. And what have we learned?

Sock Monkeys and Gnomes make excellent Tomato art! I sold all three of my solo pieces, and Motke and I sold the inside gnome/salad piece on opening day!

I really should ask more questions! Our outdoor piece was too heavy and not built properly to withstand outdoor life. It's inside the front window at A&I. Sorry everybody!

For Ethan more is always more! Note the giant tomato on his face. His idea!

Few pictures of the day. I look terrible, but it was 100 degrees, I'd been outside for hours, and my mom was taking the photo. 'Nuff said.

August 11-- Tomato Day-- and beyond...

Today is the Tomato Art Festival! If you have any free time at all today, come on over. TONS of fun!

Finished with the Tomatoes? Bop over to Plowhaus for the "Bowhaus at Plowhaus" show. I curated it, and it's wonderful if I do say so myself!

Tomorrow is CRAFT. Made the Scene Critic's Pick and mention in the Tennessean. Check it out:

And get your butt out of the house today. You live in Nashville, for heaven's sake. A little heat won't kill you (as long as you take the proper precautions!)
